Eighth month into the year and finally a blockbuster day is in the cards for theatres. Though Fighter and Kalki 2898 AD (Hindi) have gone past the Rs. 20 crores mark each on the day of their release, what one has been waiting for way too long is to see the kind of start that can be termed as truly blockbuster. Though in 2023 it seemed way too easy for multiple films to regularly score a day of Rs. 50 crores or more, not even half of that has come on the very first day of release in 2024. Well, that would change now on 15th August, what with Stree 2, Khel Khel Mein and Vedaa arriving and promising to bring back houseful boards all over again in cinemas. In fact, between these three films, around Rs. 45 crores are certainly on the cards with an outside chance of even Rs. 50 crores being scored.
Let’s first talk about the film that’s set to make the biggest contribution, Stree 2. Stating the fact, the film is now all set for a start of over Rs. 30 crores and that’s just for Thursday. The film will see paid preview shows as on Wednesday night and while that would make a good contribution as well, especially with Thursday being a national holiday, rest assured there would be huge footfalls right from the word go on August 15. In fact, if the reports turn out to be ultra-positive, then the film could just about go anywhere and even take a shot at Rs. 35 crores.
Now had it been a solo release then this kind of number was a given. However, it could well end up facing capacity issues since Khel Khel Mein and Vedaa are prestigious films and while former will have a substantial count of multiplex screens, especially dedicated to it, latter would have a good volume of single screens reserved for it. That said, this is a really long extended weekend which means Stree 2 will catch up on its audiences in days to come as well.
As for Khel Khel Mein and Vedaa, they would certainly be the next best choice after Stree 2 and this may be the case not just on the opening day but next few days as well. However, what works in their favour is the fact that behind the extended weekend, there are weeks and weeks of zero new notable releases from Bollywood. This means that if the reports end up being good (which seems like the case), then they can take a very good advantage of the open season ahead and then keep finding their audiences over a period of time.
Akshay Kumar is coming back with a comedy film after long and the trailer too has met with a positive response. On the other hand, John Abraham and Nikhil Advani combo has worked quite well in the past and this one appears to be a good hard-hitting drama as well. After the initial euphoria around Stree 2 settles down, these two films could well end up emerging as ‘lambi race ka ghoda’.
